What is the Aufguss

The Aufguss has become one of the most popular sauna ceremonies in contemporary SPAs, particularly across Europe. Originating from Nordic countries and Germany, this practice has evolved into a genuine wellness ritual, essential for luxury hotel SPAs and wellness resorts. Since 2011, nearly a thousand individuals in Italy have trained in this discipline.

But what makes the Aufguss particularly special?

The Aufguss ritual is based on the interaction of heat, steam, and essential oils, offering a unique multi-sensory experience. It normally involves three cycles of pouring and ventilation, during which three different forms of heat are experienced. The Aufguss Master or Aufgussmeister pours water, ice, or snow onto the hot sauna stones, adding 100% pure essential oils, possibly certified organic. The hot steam is then distributed with choreographed movements and ventilations involving towels or fans.

The 5 phases of the Aufguss ritual

Preparation of the ambience: The atmosphere is established by dimming the lights, creating a cosy space. Music, often an essential element of the ritual, contributes to a sense of calm and relaxation.

‘The jets’: The Aufgussmeister uses water and/or ice, along with essential oils selected for their aromatic properties. When this combination is poured over the glowing stones, it generates a cloud of fragrant steam that envelops guests.

Heat distribution: With precise, choreographed movements of the towel, the Aufgussmeister spreads the hot steam towards the guests with each throw, creating air flows that amplify the feeling of warmth and well-being.

Deep breathing: Guests are encouraged to take deep breaths, enjoying the benefits of essential oils. These oils positively impact both the body and mind, enhancing mood and alleviating stress.

Post-ritual relaxation: At the end of the ritual, it is essential to relax and restore lost fluids by drinking water or herbal tea, thus completing the rejuvenating experience.

Music and aromas: the unique aspects of the Aufguss

The use of music in the modern Aufguss ceremony is essential, comprising 50% of the overall enjoyment of the experience. From the choice of music tracks to the rhythmic variations, every detail is crafted to engage the participants.

Aroma essences also play a key role. Energising oils like mint or relaxing ones such as lavender and lemon balm are combined with melodies and movements, making each ritual unique and unrepeatable.

How to get ready for the Aufguss

Sauna culture is an essential aspect of the experience. To achieve the greatest benefits:

Enter the sauna without synthetic clothing, as it may release toxins at high temperatures. It is preferable to use a cotton towel.

Ensure you are positioned comfortably to encourage even sweating.

After the ritual, take a shower before plunging into any cold reaction bath. Replenish your fluids with herbal tea, fruit juice, or simply water at room temperature. Rest while wearing a bathrobe or towel, and adhere to the rules of the spa, promoting a harmonious coexistence with other guests.

L’importanza dell’Aufguss nelle SPA moderne

SPAs are no longer just places to relax, but true experiential destinations. Offering rituals such as the Aufguss allows facilities to distinguish themselves on the market, attracting an increasingly wellness-conscious clientele.

This is one of those times when people tend to prefer relaxing breaks in the mountains. The inclination to also experience a culture of wellness that is contextualised within the destination—especially if it is ancient and deeply rooted in local tradition—is becoming increasingly common.

According to Régis Boudon-Doris, CEO of bbspa_Group, a successful SPA must:

Integrate design and services with the area

Provide experiences that blend wellness with local traditions

Regularly update the service menu to reflect wellness trends

‘Designing and managing a mountain SPA that is capable of standing out and distinguishing itself demands great attention,’ explains Régis Boudon-Doris. ’Firstly, we are dealing with an investment that must satisfy very different needs, depending on the season, as the mountains are highly popular in both winter and summer.’
This also involves staff training and periodic updating of the SPA menu to keep up with new wellness trends.

Why invest in the Aufguss

Incorporating Aufguss into the menu of SPA services is a winning strategy for building customer loyalty and creating memorable experiences.

With a team of design and management experts, like those at bbspa_Group, SPAs can evolve into benchmarks for wellness, enhancing local resources and ensuring a substantial economic return.

The relaxation room is a haven of tranquillity and well-being dedicated to guests’ physical and mental regeneration. A well-designed relaxation room offers not only a moment of respite but also enhances the entire wellness path, combining privacy, comfort, and sensory details such as soft lighting, aromatherapy, and relaxing music.

With the contribution of Régis Boudon-Doris, CEO and Founder of bbspa_Group, we discover the essential elements and latest trends in the design of relaxation rooms, perfect for every type of spa and wellness centre.

Why the relaxation room is essential in a spa

“The relaxation room is a key element of the wellness path. It has a transitory and functional function: it helps the body stabilise, amplifying the effects of treatments or preparing it for further experiences. It is an indispensable moment of pause to rebalance temperature, relax and optimise the benefits of the spa services.”
In summary, the relaxation room

promotes deep relaxation after treatments

prepares the body for the best SPA experience

improves overall well-being, reducing stress and tension

Types of relaxation rooms and characteristics

There are different types of relaxation rooms, each designed for specific needs:

Pre-treatment rooms: areas dedicated to waiting are designed to offer comfort and calm before treatments begin.

Post-treatment rooms: cosy spaces with comfortable loungers and a relaxing atmosphere to prolong the benefits of the wellness programme.

Themed relaxation rooms: rooms that evoke specific experiences:

after the sauna: rooms with a central fire, heated loungers, and a cosy atmosphere

after the hammam: spaces with mint tea and traditional snacks

Experience rooms: immersive places with visual and sound effects, inspired by natural scenarios such as deserts, seas, or snow-capped mountains.

Convivial rooms: areas that combine relaxation and sociality are ideal for small groups or workshops.

Key elements for the perfect relaxation room

To create an unforgettable experience, it is essential to view the relaxation room as a place to pause, not just a place to pass through. Every relaxation room should include:

Comfort of furniture: ergonomic loungers, armchairs, hammocks, and soft blankets
Thermoregulation of the environment

Soft lighting: warm, adjustable lights, often combined with candles or chromotherapy

Aromatherapy: diffusers of essential oils that stimulate relaxation and well-being

Music and natural sounds: relaxing playlists or water features sound

Herbal tea corner: refreshing water, hot drinks, detox herbal teas, and healthy snacks

Privacy: room dividers or curtains for tranquillity and isolation

Natural details: green plants, ecological materials, and nature-inspired decorations

Small samples of treatments: meditation sessions led by experts, short gentle yoga or stretching classes, hand and foot treatments, or facial masks, both individual and group

The benefits of spending time in a relaxation room

Time spent in a relaxation room offers numerous benefits for the body and mind:

stress reduction and improved depth relaxation

natural detoxification and increased energy

enhancement of the effects of the treatments received

conscious socialisation, creating connections in a serene environment

quality sleep: peaceful surroundings promote a regenerative rest cycle

Guidelines for designing the SPA relaxation area

Again, we put the question to Régis Boudon-Doris of bbspa_Group.

“Designing the relaxation room(s) of a spa requires attention to many details in order to achieve a result that is satisfying for both the guest and the investor.
I will summarise some key aspects: :

Spaces and functional layout: assess the minimum space required based on the flows of the facility (there must be a balance between the relaxation area and the other spa environments) and ensure that these are well distributed. Provide separate areas for relaxation, meditation, and a tea or beverage area. The layout must be linked to the type of experience the spa wants to offer and harmonise it with the choice of lighting, colours, materials, space arrangement, etc.

Lighting: use soft, adjustable lighting. Create colour effects that enhance the spa environment. Warm lamps and candles help to create a peaceful atmosphere.

Colours and materials: it is very important to choose neutral, relaxing tones, but it is equally important that the colours enhance the spa theme. Favour natural materials such as wood, stone, soft fabrics, and green materials in general.

Sustainability: the use of eco-friendly materials and natural products, as spas are increasingly adopting sustainability practices.

Furniture: opt for comfortable furniture, chaise longues, armchairs, floor cushions, or hammocks and loungers to encourage deep relaxation. Supplementing with green plants improves air quality, while fountains or the sound of water enhances the feeling of tranquillity.

Aromatherapy: essential oil diffusers and scented candles foster a soothing atmosphere through scent.

Sounds: arrange a selection of soft music (to be renewed periodically) or sounds of nature to stimulate calmness and relaxation.

Privacy: ensure a good level of privacy, if necessary, with curtains or separators.

Activities: supplement by offering yoga sessions, meditation, or other relaxing practices (active relaxation).

Accessibility: it is very important to make the relaxation room (and, in general, the whole spa) accessible to all, taking into account different mobility needs.

Innovative trends for relaxation rooms

New spa trends are redefining the concept of the relaxation room, integrating technology and customisation to offer tailor-made experiences:

Integration of nature: spaces with vertical gardens, natural materials, and biophilic design promote psychological well-being.

Virtual and augmented reality: immersive meditation experiences that transport guests to distant environments

Smart aromatherapy: smart diffusers automatically adjust essences and scents to personal preferences.

Silence zones: areas completely isolated from noise and distractions are ideal for deep meditation.

Multi-sensory design: spaces that combine light, sound and aroma to create unique sensory experiences.

Innovative furniture: ergonomic seating, such as warm salt beds, enveloping cocoons, or relaxation alcoves.

The relaxation room is not just a complement but the beating heart of the SPA experience. Careful design, taking into account the latest trends and guests’ desires, allows you to create environments that foster well-being, relaxation, and emotional connection.

If you want to design or renovate your relaxation room, bbspa_Group is the perfect partner to turn your vision into reality.

The global wellness sector is experiencing unprecedented growth. According to the Global Wellness Institute‘s (GWI) report entitled ’Global Wellness Economy Monitor 2023‘, the wellness economy has surpassed EUR 5.2 trillion for the first time and is expected to reach EUR 7.9 trillion by 2027. This exponential growth represents a major turnaround after the impact of COVID-19, highlighting great opportunities for investors and entrepreneurs in the SPA and wellness sector.

The two main highlights to consider when looking at this market are:

High per capita spending: analysis of global data shows that annual per capita spending on wellness is equal to that on healthcare. In many cases, it exceeds spending on clothing, footwear, hotels and restaurants.

The impact on global GDP: the wellness economy contributes 5.6% of global GDP, indicating that about 1 in 20 dollars spent by consumers is on wellness products and services.

Why invest in the spa and wellness sector

With unprecedented economic growth and ever-expanding demand, the spa and wellness sector represents a highly profitable investment opportunity. We explore the key reasons that make this market so attractive to entrepreneurs and investors seeking new horizons in the world of wellness.

Steadily growing demand: more and more people are investing in improving their physical and mental wellbeing, fuelling a growing demand for spa services, holistic treatments and fitness programmes.

Portfolio diversification: investing in the sector allows you to broaden your customer base, attracting an audience interested in spa treatments, advanced nutrition and natural products.

Global trend towards health: growing awareness of the importance of health has led to increased investment in the sector, making it particularly attractive to entrepreneurs and investors.

High revenue potential: with effective marketing strategies and optimised management, spa and wellness facilities can generate significant profits in both tourist and urban locations.

Continuous innovation: the sector is constantly evolving with new technologies and improved treatments, offering opportunities to differentiate and grow.

Customer loyalty: by offering high-quality services, you can create a loyal customer base that promotes the company through word of mouth.

Growth of spa-related sectors

It is not just the core spa business that is thriving; related sectors are experiencing significant increases, amplifying the opportunities in the global wellness landscape. Let’s look at how these complementary areas are contributing to the robust growth of the entire sector.

Traditional and complementary medicine: between 2020 and 2022, the sector grew by 15%, reaching a value of EUR 483 billion.

Global spa market: currently valued at EUR 97 billion, with growth prospects in the coming years.

Spas: with a value of EUR 43 billion, full recovery is expected by 2027, reaching EUR 145.1 billion.

The leading wellness markets in the world

According to the report ‘The Global Wellness Economy: Country Rankings’, the five leading markets are:

United States

China

Germany

Japan

United Kingdom

These countries account for 59% of the global welfare economy. The Top 25 also includes nations such as Switzerland, Iceland, Sweden and several other European countries, highlighting the importance of the sector on the continent.

New post-pandemic Market Balances

The pandemic radically transformed the global wealth landscape, creating new dynamics and opportunities in international markets. Almost all major markets experienced strong growth immediately after the pandemic. In Europe, for example, the UK and the Netherlands even surpassed the size of the pre-pandemic market with increases of 120%.

Impact on GDP and opportunities in real estate

The wellness economy not only influences consumption habits but also has a tangible impact on the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of many nations. Moreover, the rise of affluence as an added value in real estate is generating significant opportunities for investors and developers. We explore how these trends are shaping the future of wellness-oriented real estate.

Significant contribution to GDP: in Europe, the wellness economy contributes 5.8% to GDP. Countries such as Austria (9%) and the UK (7.3%) show even higher percentages.

Growth of wellness real estate: the wellness-oriented real estate sector now accounts for about 3.0% of the annual global construction output. The growing demand for spaces that promote physical, emotional and community well-being requires specialised consultants to maximise returns and stand out in the market.

Investing in the spa and wellness sector offers significant opportunities for entrepreneurs and investors. Not only does it allow you to benefit from a rapidly growing market, but it also helps to promote healthy lifestyles and improve people’s quality of life.
Collaborating with industry experts is crucial to make the most of these opportunities and to ensure an optimal return on investment.

Organising and managing a SPA team requires attention to several key aspects to guarantee a high-quality service and an environment of true well-being. The challenge of creating a successful SPA team starts at the very beginning, with the selection of the people who will be part of it.

For some time now, the sector has been suffering from a chronic shortage of staff with the appropriate skills, and there is an increasing need for support from companies specialising in selection, training and productivity monitoring.
Incentives, motivation and continuous updating are undoubtedly some of the strategic choices that create an engaging and creative working environment capable of attracting and retaining customers. However, the aspects involved in managing a SPA team are many more.

The 10 winning strategies

We discussed this with Gabriella Francia, co-founder of bbspa_Group, training manager and SPA director of bbspa_Management.

The working team is a fundamental element for the success of the SPA. – points out Gabriella – and those who manage them must also strive to keep them motivated and constructively collect feedback. Speaking of effective strategies for building and managing a successful team, our international experience leads us to apply the following:

Hiring with heart and mind: We seek and hire qualified and passionate people, focusing on certifications, wellness experience and soft skills such as empathy and communication. However, this is often difficult to achieve independently. At bbspa, we are constantly working to define a selection process thanks to our partnership with Restart HR, a company specialising in the search and development of human capital. With their “scientific” method and their professionals, we support our SPAs and work in synergy to carefully assess the potential and technical requirements of the candidates. Once in the team, Restart HR also intervenes in projects aimed at stimulating, motivating and binding professionals to the SPA.

Define roles and build team loyalty: it is useful to clearly identify, describe and share the roles of each member (e.g. beautician, masseur, receptionist, manager) to ensure that everyone understands their responsibilities and contribution to the SPA project. We should think of our employees as ‘customers’ who need to be ‘won over’ every day by a rewarding workplace. In addition, an environment where feedback is valued can increase employee satisfaction and retention and reduce turnover.

Motivate, motivate, motivate: motivation can be intrinsic, leveraging the emotional aspect, the right stimuli and interpersonal relationships. It can also be extrinsic when a recognition system is put in place to celebrate individual and group achievements.

Create a positive and comfortable working environment: It is very important to create a collaborative and inclusive atmosphere by organising team-building events and social activities that strengthen the bonds between people. Moments of laughter and jokes are ideal for filling the SPA with positive energy. Make workspaces more stimulating with relaxation areas, brainstorming zones and creative spaces where team members can freely express themselves.

Value flexibility, both requested and granted. Allowing flexible working hours increases satisfaction and work-life balance. Demanding flexible working hours, on the other hand, ensures adequate shift coverage, taking into account small and large customer flows and staff preferences.

Provide opportunities for professional development: Training, workshops and professional development opportunities can help team members grow in their careers.

Plan continuous training: Provide programmes to update staff skills (e.g. courses on new treatment techniques, client management, safety regulations, etc.). Mentoring courses can be very useful, where more experienced members can guide newcomers. This not only helps with training. It also builds stronger relationships within the team. It is important to maintain the ‘customer focus’ by teaching the team the importance of the customer experience. Every member must be able to provide a high-quality service and be attentive to customer needs.

Evaluate and reward: Set clear and achievable goals, involving the team in their definition to increase accountability and commitment.
Identify performance indicators to evaluate work and ensure there are opportunities for feedback and improvement. Recognise successes, large and small, with awards, special mentions or simple words of appreciation. This will create a positive working environment. Tailor-made incentives for team members based on their interests and goals (e.g. gym memberships, cooking classes, travel) are highly appreciated. Incorporate gamification elements into daily work or create point systems or rankings for achieving specific goals to make work more engaging and fun.

Embrace clear and direct communication: organise regular internal meetings to quickly discuss goals, feedback, and suggestions and resolve critical issues. Create a collaborative and inclusive working environment, including team-building events and social activities to strengthen bonds between members. Regular and constructive discussion helps to understand improvement areas and feel valued.

Encourage employee wellbeing: lunchtime or end-of-day sports activities, stress management courses, and the provision of areas for relaxation or creativity can all help.

Water is the most versatile and beneficial element for body and mind, and the SPA is where its properties are enhanced to offer experiences of total well-being and relaxation. Traditional settings are flanked by new trends and technological solutions that improve performance and profitability.

Spas are places dedicated to wellness, beauty and body care, where water plays a fundamental role and represents the “fil rouge”.

Today, in the most developed spas, water has receded in many respects compared to the past associated with traditional applications such as showers, whirlpools and swimming pools. In recent years, we have seen an increase in the quality of water environments in spas, in terms of innovative experiences in line with today’s consumer needs.

The clientele of spas has broadened and diversified to the point where great attention must be paid to the design and improvement of services. Spas also follow the evolution of people’s tastes and technological progress,” says Régis Boudon-Doris, CEO and founder of bbspa_Group, a company that has been designing and managing spas worldwide for more than 30 years.

Not only should water not be missing in a SPA, but it is also true that it can be used in unusual and innovative ways compared to the past, for example in solid form, with a very wide range of treatments and environments dedicated to cold therapy, much in demand not only by sportsmen. This does not mean that traditional treatments will disappear, but we must move with the times to make spas a real attraction for consumers and a profitable investment for entrepreneurs.”

What forms can water take in a spa

Let’s start with the applications that represent the “great classics”:

1. Swimming pools: inevitable and in great demand. They lend themselves to infinite solutions: indoor and/or outdoor, recreational and/or therapeutic, filled with thermal water, sea water or regenerated water, with biofilters or with chemicals. They can certainly be the driving force behind a spa project, but the choices must be made consistently and in synergy with the SPA concept and business model.

2. Whirlpools: considered one of the main attractions of spas, but in addition to the choice of water and its treatment, as in swimming pools, the strong points and consequently the strategic choices concern the types, positioning and composition of the whirlpool jets. These choices make them effective, appreciated and experienced as a treatment of great value and not just as “water games”.

3. Onsen: the traditional Japanese bath, which involves a real ritual of immersion in tubs of very hot thermal water (almost always over 40°). It is a ceremony that promotes skin cleansing, muscle relaxation and relief from joint pain. Traditional onsen baths are made of Japanese cypress (inoki) for indoor use or granite for outdoor use.

4. Cryo tubs: these are undoubtedly the trendiest tubs in spas today, and they are also very popular with top sportsmen and women who want to recover quickly after intense exertion. They are essentially individual tubs with water at a temperature close to 0°C in which to immerse oneself. Some models allow immersion without contact with the water, which are used in biohacking and longevity courses/programmes.

5. Kneipp paths: these are paths that alternate between hot and cold water basins with a temperature difference of 10/12°. The immersion mainly involves the lower limbs, up to the knees, to stimulate vascular gymnastics. Some pools are often equipped with a floor to stimulate the arch of the foot with stones of different granulometry, to improve blood circulation and obtain a revitalising effect. A complete Kneipp course should include pools for the upper limbs and face.

6. Sensory showers: they alternate different types of water jets at different temperatures and flow rates, in conjunction with chromotherapy and aromatherapy systems, to create true wellness itineraries. They can be programmed to interact with the body and mind, stimulating circulation, toning the skin and providing a pleasant sensation of freshness and energy.

7. Sauna: Contrary to popular belief, water is also used in the sauna as a valuable element to create the ceremonial Aufguss. Ice scented with essential oils is poured over hot stones to create steam and raise the actual and perceived temperature. This promotes cleansing, and relaxation and has a beneficial effect on the metabolism and immune system.

8. Frigidarium: like the cryo-baths, this is the experience of cold, achieved in various ways through the combination of ice and snow. Using these natural elements, we create environments or itineraries where, in addition to the usual ice waterfalls, snow showers, ice and/or snow walls, we find mist and cold water cascades and reaction baths. A series of elements must be carefully composed to create a spa experience that is consistent with all the other elements in the spa Wellness Path.

9. Turkish bath or hammam: first of all, it is important to understand that this is not a simple hot steam bath, but a journey made up of different environments, with different percentages of steam (from 65% to 95%) and different temperatures (from 32° to 48°) and that each environment has a different function and ritual. So, you will go from a steam bath to a hot stone massage, from an energising massage to an aromatherapy steam bath. All are designed to regenerate and purify the body and mind.

One thought is obligatory: why is it that, despite all the previous declinations of the ‘water’ experience, we are often faced with ‘photocopied spas’ consisting of a sauna, steam bath, prefabricated jacuzzi and relaxation area?
The expectations of spa visitors are now very different and those investing in the sector need to take this into account, especially if they want to achieve high levels of customer satisfaction and success!

How to innovate the water experience

If we talk about innovations and evolutions of water in spas, it is not so much about environments, but rather about new technological solutions, new applications or trends that enrich the panorama of wellness offers and increase their quality and benefits. We explored this aspect in depth with Régis Boudon-Doris.

“The main innovations relate to the interaction between experiences and users. Passive enjoyment of a spa facility or environment is no longer allowed! This means that when I have to design experiences, I have to tailor them to each client’s objectives.

A classic example is the whirlpool bath. It should no longer be conceived as a space of ‘water bubbles’, but rather as a moving experience where different stations create paths that massage, caress, and swim against the current, all in response to individual needs.
There is a growing trend towards environments that interact with people, opening windows of relationships with others and increasing the attractiveness of the place. Emotional showers have also come a long way and, with their wide range of programming options, make it possible to personalise the experience with paths that respond to a variety of needs, enriched with innovative and regenerating sensory stimuli.

Of course, we are talking about solutions that require a significant investment,” says Régis, “but my 30 years of experience with the bbspa_Group allows me to say with confidence that what is invested is quickly transformed into an increase in customer frequency and, consequently, in the profitability of the spa.

Another example of technology at the service of a renewed and attractive water/wellness experience, and one in which our team is increasingly called upon to intervene in indoor SPA environments (hotel SPAs are all too often “underground”), is the creation of immersive experiences, i.e. evocative and dreamlike projections inside environments such as swimming pools, saunas and relaxation areas. These immersive experiences, resulting from collaborations with video artists, can evoke suggestions that eliminate the perception of being indoors, greatly enhancing the sense of wellbeing and creating particularly Instagrammable places”.

SPAs are havens of wellness and relaxation, ideal for every season of the year. But how do you attract clients during the summer months?

A summer SPA holiday is definitely a relaxing and regenerating experience. For this reason, many SPAs offer special packages during this time of year to pamper their clients and guarantee maximum relaxation.

If the SPA/thermal holiday was the preferred choice in the past during the colder months, today this seasonality is outdated in favour of holidays dedicated to sport, wellness, health and relaxation even in summer. SPA environments are certainly among the best suited to meet these expectations.

Spas in summer: what to do?

Summer is the perfect time to take care of yourself.
One of the main attractions is the open-air pool, with water games, hydro bike courses and Jacuzzis, where you can relax in the sun, take a refreshing dip and enjoy the surrounding countryside, even better in an exclusive setting.

And that’s not all: SPA treatments, regenerating massages, body peelings, mud wraps, yoga or Pilates sessions, walks in the surrounding countryside or simply relaxing in a dedicated area are just some of the suggestions that can be found in the ‘summer packages’ offered by the spas.

So how do you attract people to your SPA during the summer months?

To create an attractive offer that meets your customers’ needs there are several aspects to consider. So how do you do it? We discussed this with the team at the BBSPA Group, a company that has been working in the world of wellness and SPA since 1993, creating projects that combine design, technology, innovation and training.

For example, BBSPA’s ‘We Manage‘ consultancy service helps investors and managers of wellness and SPA centres to develop projects and management models with measurable success.

With these considerations in mind, let us evaluate together some innovative strategies to deseasonalise the SPA and make it an attractive destination in the summer months:

Create unique summer experiences:

Refreshing treatments:based on fresh, natural ingredients such as cucumber, mint, aloe vera and citrus fruits. Cooling massages, moisturising facial masks and fresh herb wraps. Exfoliating to smooth the skin and prepare it for tanning is always appreciated.

Outdoor water trails: wellness trails with outdoor pools, waterfalls and Kneipp paths.

Relaxation areas with shaded loungers and outdoor massage booths.

Outdoor yoga and meditation: Yoga and meditation sessions in the morning or at sunset in outdoor spaces with panoramic views. These activities are ideal for the summer month and can attract a large audience interested in holistic wellness.

The use of ice (ice fountains, cryotherapy, ice baths) for the face and body. The world of cryotherapy treatments has become very popular with sportsmen and women and those on longevity programmes.

Use of heat! (sauna, hammam, etc.) it is good to dispel the myth that hot, humid environments are “intimidating” in the summer. On the contrary, these areas, used in the right hot/cold sequence, allow you to cool down by helping your body to acclimate to the high summer temperatures. A kind of gym for our metabolism, making it more resistant to climate change.

Outdoor sports/wellness with Pilates, hydro bike and water aerobics classes.

2. Themed events and special offers:

Detox Weekend

Beauty Weekends

Romantic getaway packages

Family spa days

SPA evenings under the stars: create evening events with SPA access enriched with live music, healthy aperitifs and treatments for unique experiences that combine relaxation fun and sociability.

3. Tailor-made packages and loyalty programmes:

Tailored packages designed specifically for the summer months

Summer loyalty programmes that reward regular customers with discounts on treatments, exclusive access to events and special giveaways.

Autumn membership pre-sales with special discounts and events to launch new treatments and/or equipment.

4. Partnerships and promotions (very important)

Activating partnerships with local hotels and resorts can enable the integration of wellness services, improving and diversifying the offer.

Social media promotions: using social media to promote summer offers or organising contests, giveaways and other activities can help increase contacts and, consequently, sales.

Group’ offers: offering discounts for groups of friends or family members can encourage visits by groups of people with advantageous packages and social activities.

In conclusion, precisely because there are so many aspects to be carefully assessed, it is important to remember the importance of targeted management, capable of laying the foundations to make your SPA profitable and successful. To do this, you need a control room, and you need to entrust your project to professionals.

This means being able to count on the constant support of a team ready to follow the entire management process smoothly, with a rational, analytical and personalised approach, capable of enhancing the specificities of each SPA.

The sauna environment is experiencing a real revolution thanks to new technologies and innovative design. New saunas offer increasingly comfortable, personalised and engaging experiences. Caution though! Design and business planning should be entrusted to experts.

In Europe, and many parts of the world in general, it is now common to spend part of the year in a SPA or wellness centre, taking advantage of packages that combine relaxation, massages, sometimes combined with food and beverage appointments or wellness itineraries that stimulate guests, make them feel cared for, pampered and bring economic benefits to the SPA. This is also why figures such as the Spa Operator, the Aufgussmeister or specialised spa design and management teams are essential today. Clients are aware of what is new in the wellness world, either through personal experience or word of mouth, and expect to experience unique moments. The sauna is certainly one of the most highly valued and trendy SPA environments.

Sauna Tradition

The first historical records of sauna environments date back to 12th century Finland, but the use of heat baths can be traced back to customs with even deeper roots. Many cultures worldwide have developed this knowledge and created environments dedicated to relaxation and health, often combined with purification rituals. For example, the construction of sweat lodges was a common practice among many pre-Columbian populations in North and Central America. The ancient Romans developed and spread a true spa culture in which the alternation of immersion in hot (calidarium) and cold (frigidarium) pools of water in many ways resembled the sauna experience. Similar customs were widespread in the Middle East, Russia and Japan. It was probably from these areas that the Finns imported the custom of the heat bath and developed it into what is now known worldwide as the Finnish sauna.

The benefits

The warm environment promotes relaxation, purification and well-being of body and mind. Today, the benefits of the sauna have been greatly enhanced, mainly by introducing new technologies, new ways of experiencing it and welcoming, inviting design choices that amplify its pleasantness, transforming this environment into a modern, sophisticated space that offers personalised experiences of well-being and socialisation.

Detoxification: the intense heat of the sauna induces sweating, which helps the body to eliminate toxins and impurities.

Muscle relaxation: the heat helps to relax muscles and relieve tension and joint pain.

Improved circulation: the alternation of hot and cold, typical of sauna use, stimulates blood circulation and enhances oxygenation of tissues.

Stress reduction: saunas promote relaxation and stress reduction combining heat, silence and often a natural environment.

Types of saunas

There are different types of saunas, each with its own characteristics and benefits. Here are the most common:

1. Finnish sauna: This is the most common and traditional type of sauna. It is characterised by a warm and dry environment, with temperatures of up to 90-100 degrees Celsius. The walls are lined with wood, often fir or pine, and the hot stones are sprayed with water to create steam.

2. Infrared sauna: This type of sauna uses infrared lamps to heat the body directly, without heating the surrounding air. Temperatures are lower than in a Finnish sauna, but the penetration of infrared rays can promote sweating and provide health benefits such as relief from muscle pain.

3. Steam sauna: better known as a Turkish bath or hammam, the steam sauna is characterised by a hot and humid environment. Temperatures are generally lower than in a Finnish sauna, but humidity can be very high.

4. Smoke sauna: This type of sauna is typical of Nordic cultures (such as the traditional Sami sauna). Instead of using a stove or hot stones, the smoke sauna uses a fire outside the building to heat the walls. When the walls are well heated, the smoke is removed, and the sauna is ready for use. The environment inside is warm and smoky.

5. Mobile sauna: This is a sauna environment designed to be transported and used in different locations. It can be a sauna on wheels or a dismountable structure.

6. Panoramic saunas: very popular today, these saunas are appreciated for their breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside or for their ‘immersion’ effect in the surrounding nature, thanks to panoramic windows and skilful planning and design.

When designing a sauna, it is very important to consider which type to include depending on the experience you want to offer your audience. This is because not all the above activities are suitable for every sauna environment: each requires specific spaces, temperatures, lighting and essences, as well as the possible presence of specialised trainers.

Designing a sauna in a SPA

The design phase of a sauna in a SPA is crucial in ensuring an optimal wellness experience for the target clientele. A careful design takes into account various aspects such as available space, capacity, materials, ventilation, environment, staff and equipment required.

A well-designed sauna helps to create a relaxing and rejuvenating environment and contributes to raising the level of SPA services.
An important detail is the capacity of the sauna: it is necessary to determine how many people can use it at the same time and to ensure that the space can comfortably accommodate all guests.

The choice of materials is another important aspect. The materials used must guarantee good heat resistance and hygiene, but they must also help to create a warm, cosy atmosphere that is in harmony with the SPA environment and landscape. Ventilation is another important consideration to ensure that the air in the sauna has the right temperature/dryness/humidity balance and is free of unpleasant odours.

Then come all the other elements that make up a pleasant sauna experience: benches, lighting, remote control of temperature and humidity, water supply system for aromas, sounds, etc.

New frontiers: technology and design

Technological innovations include advanced control systems that allow temperature, humidity and lighting to be adjusted to suit different user needs. Some saunas are also equipped with integrated touch screens allowing the user to select personalised programmes and enhance the desired experience. For example, some saunas have aromatherapy programmes that diffuse essential oils to enhance the relaxing or rejuvenating atmosphere. Others are equipped with integrated sound systems to play music or relaxing melodies during the sauna session.

When it comes to design, modern saunas are characterised by clean, minimalist lines combined with high-quality materials such as glass and wood, which are used to create elegant and comfortable environments. Where possible, saunas are designed to blend in with their surroundings by using glass windows that offer panoramic views of nature.

Sauna experience

The Aufguss is undoubtedly the most popular sauna ceremony today. However, other practices can be experienced in the sauna to enhance the experience, benefits and relaxation. Here are a few examples:

1. Exfoliation: before entering the sauna, body exfoliation can be performed in a specially designed room opposite the sauna to remove dead cells, improve blood circulation and better enjoy the effects of the sauna.

2. Face masks: while you are in the sauna, you can apply a face mask (e.g. clay-based or with natural ingredients) to moisturise and purify the skin.

3. Massage: while in the sauna, you can opt for a guided, relaxing self-massage to complete the experience or, immediately after the sauna, you can treat yourself to a massage to relieve muscle tension.

4. Yoga or meditation: Practicing yoga in the sauna can be a unique and beneficial experience for both body and mind. It is an increasingly popular practice, but it is important to follow a few simple rules and to rely on the guidance of a trained teacher.

Why invest in the sauna to grow your SPA business

Today, the benefits of the sauna have been greatly enhanced by introducing new technologies, new ways of experiencing it and welcoming, inviting design choices that enhance its pleasantness, transforming this environment into a modern and sophisticated space that offers personalised wellness experiences. This is why the sauna is a powerful ally in growing the business of SPA and wellness centres. Let’s discover why together:

Saunas attract people all year round. They are not too dependent on seasonality, so their revenue potential is considerable.

The sauna is considered to be an ally of health, which is very important given the great emphasis placed on prevention and wellness in today’s society.

Integrating the sauna with other services (e.g. food & beverage) opens new opportunities for growth and customer satisfaction.

Once installed, saunas require little maintenance and, if well managed, provide high returns.

The sauna is known worldwide as a place of tradition and well-being. Its potential for activity is therefore considerable.

Designing and implementing a profitable sauna environment that meets modern requirements is not easy and requires the intervention of professionals who can follow the investment through all its phases: architecture, functions, technical solutions, management, etc.

When people talk about wellness today, they often associate it with the concept of luxury, which is no longer just a matter of opulence, but a journey through authentic, sustainable and personalised experiences.

How to design a successful experiential SPA environment?

The challenge is to create an evocative journey, perhaps inspired by ancient Roman baths, that is highly technological but without the technology detracting from the relaxing and emotional atmosphere typical of a SPA.
We talked about this with Régis Boudon-Doris, CEO and Founder of bbspa_Group, a company specialising in designing and managing SPAs worldwide.

What do you look for in a SPA to choose from among so many others?

1- Personalisation of the service

The concept of wellness has evolved to become a highly personalised offer. It is a combination of beauty, style and a service that touches the individuality of the guest. Whether it is a professional seeking relaxation or a family on holiday, every SPA must be designed with a deep understanding of its audience. In this way, the study of the target group becomes the key to a successful project. The key words are surprise and uniqueness, aspects that must also be taken into account when designing an experience where emotion, comfort and relaxation are the protagonists.

2 – Experiential benefits for body and mind

A SPA is no longer just a place, but a gateway to an unforgettable experience.
“The key concept in designing a SPA experience is to work on the body as well as the mind and emotions. Physical and mental well-being must go hand in hand, and environments such as SPAs and thalassotherapy centres are perfect places for effective and stimulating wellness experiences” explains Régis Boudon-Doris.

3 – Multi-sensory involvement

“Focusing on physical and mental balance also means offering people olfactory, visual and auditory stimulation. Sensory stimulation combined with deep relaxation enhances the results of the SPA experience, giving the client a more lasting and positive effect. As long as it is done well! Total immersion in the local context by offering immersive experiences is also important”.

4 – Enjoying the benefits of the SPA experience

For the user, the SPA experience becomes a multi-step sensory journey. Imagine a journey that winds its way through carefully selected elements, state-of-the-art tools and technologies, all orchestrated to lead the guest towards holistic wellness. At the centre of this journey is the element of water in all its forms, which, together with a skilful interplay of heat, cold and humidity variations, creates a unique experience that nourishes body and soul.
Each stage is designed to enrich the route, making it distinctive and memorable.
Moreover, the user experience depends not only on the nature and innovation of the services, but also on the design of the spaces, the lighting, the colours and, above all, the professionals who accompany the guest. “This multidimensional approach,” says Régis Boudon-Doris, “not only enhances every aspect of the path, but also transforms the environment into a narrative of well-being”.

5- Designing the SPA experience

For entrepreneurs, creating SPA circuits is a process that requires the same attention to detail as the overall design of a SPA. It is essential to start with a thorough knowledge of the target audience, analysing the catchment area and profiling the target clientele. The secret lies in adapting the design to the diversity of the clientele: entrepreneurs need to outline different experiences, whether they are targeting a business audience looking for an oasis of peace after a hard day’s work, or holidaymakers looking for a wellness retreat in the midst of nature.

For everyone, however, the surprise factor is paramount. Each SPA environment must be designed to tell a story, evoke emotion and offer an unprecedented experience.

The real challenge is to break the mould of conventional SPAs and embark on a new design path that enhances the uniqueness of each space. It is time to move away from the idea of a standardised SPA and to embrace a new paradigm of originality and innovation.

6- An example of an experiential approach

“The sauna,” explains Régis, “is no longer what it used to be. It can no longer be a closed room with dry heat, but an open window onto a breathtaking view. Modern saunas are designed to merge with Aufguss ceremonies, transforming into places of active well-being where guests can participate in controlled breathing sessions, be lulled by the sound of Tibetan bells or immerse themselves in yoga sessions designed to realign mind and body. At the heart of this transformation is an intimate dialogue with the individual’s emotions, creating an experience that touches the soul as well as the body”.

What are the trends?

Cryotherapy is an increasingly popular practice these days. The popularity of cold-based treatments is growing not only among athletes seeking to improve performance and speed up recovery, but also among those seeking greater self-awareness and deep relaxation.

Another trend is to seek out a world-class SPA environment on one’s doorstep, as wellness becomes an integral part of daily life, not just a holiday.

Régis also stresses the importance of the choice of materials when creating a SPA. Every detail, from the fabric of the curtains to the intensity of the lighting, must be carefully chosen to ensure a tactile and sensory experience that is fully immersive.

Furthermore, attention to hygiene and the durability of materials is not just a matter of aesthetics but is crucial to ensuring that the project is sustainable and profitable in the long term. In this context, technical and operational management is critical to the success of a wellness investment.

SPA staff training and management

“Creating a memorable SPA experience goes far beyond offering treatments; the selection, training and management of a specialised team is crucial” says Régis. “To make every visit an unforgettable experience, you need staff who are not only skilled in wellness techniques, but who also know how to guide guests on a personalised journey of relaxation and rejuvenation.

It is therefore necessary to overcome the traditional vision of the SPA, where the client only goes for a massage or a treatment. Today’s guests expect to be pampered, they almost want to feel part of a family, which stimulates the desire to come back.

In order to achieve this, it is essential to create and constantly train a team that manages the experience with competence, empathy and personalised attention”.

The quest for wellness and quality of life is becoming increasingly pivotal to housing decisions, leading to an interesting development in the real estate sector: the growing demand for SPAs within apartment buildings or residential areas.

Wellness, fitness and SPA areas within common areas for the benefit of residents are now popular amenities, especially among Millennials and Generation Z.

In this context, it is crucial to examine the benefits that condominium SPAs offer residents and to understand the market trends that are shaping this phenomenon.

Today, wellness is a true philosophy of life and, not surprisingly, for some years now (and even more so since COVID), social and economic indicators and industry research have highlighted the need for people to devote at least one hour a week to themselves in order to defeat stress and live more peacefully.

As a result, in addition to the steady growth of SPAs in hotels, resorts and holiday destinations, there has been a gradual increase in residential SPAs.

What trends is the residential SPA responding to?

Let’s explore the main trends in residential construction that focus on wellness as a key element of a home.

Integration of wellness into residential structures: developers, architects and designers are integrating these services directly into residential structures to attract health and wellness conscious buyers.

Personalising the experience: offering personalised services to meet the individual needs of residents, from personalised fitness to bespoke wellness treatments.

Technology and innovation: adopting innovative technologies to enhance the user experience, such as digital access, automation of services and integration of smart devices for health and fitness monitoring.

Sustainability: There is a growing focus on environmental sustainability, including the use of eco-friendly materials, efficient energy management systems and the integration of waste reduction practices.

Social and community experiences: Condominium spas are no longer just places for individual relaxation but are becoming places for socialising and creating community among residents through events, classes and shared activities.

Long-term investment: Buyers see them as a long-term investment in their own health and wellbeing, as well as adding value to the property in terms of return and market appeal.

Residential SPA and target groups

The generations most involved in house hunting are the Millennials and Generation Z. Born and raised in the age of technology and digital, these young people are often very environmentally and ecologically aware. Their great ally is the internet, from which they also draw inspiration for their thinking and search for their ‘nest’.

What do these customers ask for?
They want modern, eco-friendly, smart, efficient environments in the city (i.e. close to necessary services such as schools etc.). Choices that reflect a practical approach to everyday life and remote working.

The most popular services are shared spaces and common areas: caretaker/reception (also for mail and courier pick-up), gym and SPA, play area/party area (especially for families with children).

How to design an effective and profitable residential SPA

Creating a Wellness & SPA space in a private home, and even more so in a communal residential area, is not just a question of space and cost. The ability to propose beautiful and functional solutions that meet the objectives set comes into play.

It is important to address the challenges related to the design, management and sustainability of these facilities. The adoption of sustainable practices and attention to safety and maintenance are key to ensuring the long-term success of condominium SPAs.

The design phase is very important and there are essential requirements that must be met (especially when we are talking about services in common areas, with consequent responsibilities on the part of builders, administrators, tenants of the building and maintenance personnel). For this reason, it is very important to entrust the design task to those who are able to maximise the potential of a Wellness & SPA area, skillfully combining technology, design, work management, practicality and comfort.

Today’s demands include comfort and connection to the outdoors, without sacrificing technology, comfort and functionality. Another essential element is water in all its forms. Residential SPAs may include swimming pools, but more often they include whirlpool baths in their many evolutions.

There are various types of saunas, baths, or showers in multiple sensory versions, including frigidariums, Kneipp paths, and other areas dedicated to mindfulness activities such as yoga, biohacking, cryo, not to mention various forms of muscle-relaxing activities. In the latter case, it is necessary to manage lighting and acoustics appropriately to make the environments truly conducive to serenity.

Ultimately, condominium spas not only add value to residential properties, but are also a tangible sign of the importance people attach to their well-being and quality of life. Looking ahead, the demand for condominium SPAs is expected to continue to grow, pushing the property industry to innovate and adapt to meet the ever-changing needs of city dwellers.<s></s>

At the recent CES in Las Vegas, French start-up Capsix Robotics unveiled a robotic arm capable of performing a professional massage.
“70% of people suffer from back pain, 60% suffer from chronic stress, it’s a big problem – said François Eyssautier, CEO of the startup.
Capsix Robotics.iYu, as the robot is called, scans the body as soon as the client lies down on the couch to understand its shape, then studies and delivers a targeted massage“.
The masseurs who are advising the start-up insist that the robot cannot replace a masseur, but it can provide specialized assistance.

Is it possible to entrust a robot with the execution of a massage?

We asked Gabriella Francia, co-founder of bbspa_Group and training manager, who has been involved for years in innovative training programmes for SPAs, cosmetic companies and applied aesthetics.

“Massage can certainly be defined as a therapeutic activity that aims to benefit both the body and the mind.
If we look at massage only in terms of manual dexterity, technology will probably one day be able to compete with man; but if we look at the intangible, emotional sphere, I don’t think any robot will ever be able to match the magic that a professional can create with a good massage.
In a treatment consisting of touching, percussion, kneading, friction, vibration or pressure, it is clear that the masseur’s ‘touch’ makes all the difference.
Massage is not just physical contact: many emotions are held in the muscles and are released during the treatment. “Touch” is what makes the difference in a massage,’ explains Gabriella Francia, ‘and it is no coincidence that the Academy section of bbspa_group has created a course dedicated to it. Not only that, but it is an expression of the approach to the client and the relationship of empathy that is created: all this is part of a broader concept of massage.

For the time being, artificial intelligence is a complement, not a replacement,’ adds Gabriella. For example, Aquamotus is a massage shower system that can reproduce 16 types of massage in the rain.

Another example of the integration of advanced technology and spa treatments is Zerobody, a patented system with Starpool that allows you to float in weightlessness and regenerate your body and mind. This does not replace the operator, but rather complements the SPA services on offer.

Today, when we think of a massage given by a robot, we do not think of the tactile aspect, but probably of something therapeutic. I would rather say that we need to push for greater awareness of the importance of planning and training human capital, aspects that really make a difference! Unfortunately, training is still undervalued, both in terms of budget and planning”!

Is there anything new on the massage planet?

“There are no striking innovations in the sector. I would say that today, investors and operators have developed a greater sensitivity to a personalised approach: the improvement of massage technique goes through this step, i.e. understanding and adapting to the contingent needs of the client.

How to personalise a massage

“A massage does not have to be the same for everyone, using the same technique. An Ayurvedic massage, for example, needs to be tailored to the person and their psycho-physical condition at that moment. This means better results.
Adequate training, combined with experience, makes it possible to understand the importance of ‘touch’, adds Gabriella, which includes many details that are only apparently marginal: towels, temperatures, inclination of the table, and so on. Attention must be a constant when talking about massage.

The ambience and treatment room also play a key role in customising the service. As bbspa_Group, we have created protocols for SPA menus and environments that support the profitability needs of investors, while identifying and meeting the expectations of the target clientele. This means increasing the value of the investment by adding value to the location, the team, the SPA menu, the environment, etc.”
